The Comedy Spartans Improv Family Show at Austin’s Park n’ Pizza

FridayNight-1

You know a comedian is good when they can take a random suggestion from the audience and make a joke out of it on the spot. As in, singing a song using words that rhyme with Tom. Or Jan. Or Morgan. Sounds silly? It was AND it made us laugh.

That’s Improv comedy for you and it take some especially talented people to successfully pull it off.

A new kind of family fun has been brought to the North Austin area with the introduction of The Comedy Spartans to Austin’s Park n’ Pizza. The Comedy Spartans are an Improv group of 8 people that are quick on their feet and will make you laugh out loud. And they are bringing that wit to Austin’s Park n’ Pizza in a new show called Friday Night Live each Friday night at 7:30pm.

Is it Fun for the Whole Family?

Each Friday night, The Comedy Spartans brings Friday Night Live to Austin Parks n’ Pizza. When we attended this past Friday, they made up skits, songs, and played games all using suggestions from the audience. Some were “groan-out-loud-lame” (which is what they were going for) but most were really funny. The show is very similar to the popular “Who’s Line is it?”, which was on TV a few years ago.

There is a great deal of audience participation and my kids really enjoyed helping provide suggestions for the comedians. I knew it was a hit with my family when my husband started to laugh – he’s hard nut to crack y’all. My 5 year old became a bit wriggly towards the end, so I might wait a year or two to take him back. But the show is perfect for 8 and up. Even the teens in the room got into it.

Moderated by a “referee”, teams earn points based on how much they make us laugh, whether they followed the rules of the game, and other things that the ref decides on the spot…this is improv. The ref does a great job of keeping the fun moving along and garnering good suggestions from the audience too.

What are the Details?

The 90 minute show includes full dinner & drinks buffet at Austin Parks n’ Pizza. Make sure you come early enough to eat before the show, as you will not want to leave the fun for more food and the buffet is closed after the show. The show costs $9.95 and does not include the park attractions. However, for $15 more, you have unlimited access to the park rides & attractions. But make sure you come early enough to enjoy it as the show ends at 9pm and the park closes at 10 pm.

I think it is a fun, family evening and am so happy to see a good, clean comedy show for all ages in North Austin.  Plan a family night and give Friday Night Live a try!

Thanks again for the great review! I’m the troupe manager and producer and we actually have about 20 performers who we rotate in and out of the cast so not is every show different every week, as is the nature of improv, so are the performers. Hope to see you again soon!
