When you think of Lubbock, is it all dusty plains & cowboy hats as far as the eye can see? Would you be surprised if I told you that Lubbock is much more than Texas Tech University? Yes, the town’s history is rooted in farming, but it has grown into a cultural hotspot, featuring great museums, a few wineries, and live music. I was impressed with how much there is to do here with families and wanted to highlight some favorites with you.
Lubbock, Texas: Science Spectrum & OMNI Theater
Lubbock’s Science Spectrum is a hands-0n museum that features several science experiments for all ages, Lubbock’s only public aquarium, and a fantastic Children’s museum. They just opened a special exhibit, Pirates & Treasure. This exhibit explores the history of treasure, the technology used to find treasure, and several hands-on play areas for kids (pirate ship anyone?). Sounds fun! While you are here, take in a science show at the OMNI Theater.
Lubbock, Texas: Buddy Holly Center
Lubbock was the home of 1950’s rock-n-roll artist Buddy Holly, so you must pay tribute to this music legend buy visiting the Buddy Holly Center. The Gallery features rare artifacts from the singer’s life, including stage clothing, fan letters, personal photographs, and more. You can also tour the J.I. Allison House, where Buddy Holly & the Crickets wrote many of their hit songs.
Lubbock, Texas: Silent Wings Museum
Called a “hidden treasure in Lubbock”, the Silent Wings Museum promotes the history of the World War II military glider program. After viewing a movie on the history of the program, you have the chance to see Glider information & artifacts, including a restored WACO CG-4A, a mainstay of the U.S. glider force that flew in every major invasion of the Second World War.
Lubbock, Texas: Stars & Stripes Drive-In Theatre
For a fun, nostalgic experience, take the family to see a movie at the Drive-In. The Stars & Stripes Drive-In Theatre has been rated #3 on Tripadvisor of all drive-ins in the country! They play modern movies & have a 50’s style cafe & diner!
