Most schools are out this upcoming Monday for President’s Day. Take advantage of the kids day off and do something different!
Here are 5 Fun Things to Do on President’s Day in Austin:
1. Check out the new exhibits at the LBJ Presidential Library: The Library is offering free admission on Martin Luther King Day and it is a perfect time to go and see all the new exhibits that were just opened in December.
2. Learn all about President Lyndon B. Johnson’s boyhood life at the LBJ National Historic Park: Located in Stonewall, TX (about an hour west of ATX), tour the Texas White House (set up as it was when he was President), pet many of the cattle that grace this actual working ranch, and see the school he attended. As a bonus, spend some time at the Sauer-Beckmann Farm, a living history farm – all FREE!
3. Teach the kids a little more history at the Texas Military Forces Museum: We loved our half day visit to Camp Mabry where we learned about Texas Military History – from the battle at the Alamo to the Gulf Wars. With actual tanks, planes, and other vehicles as well as some cool memorabilia, this museum is top notch and interests all ages. For a bonus, take a quick hike up Mt. Bonnell afterwards.
4. Take the kids out for a day of Geocaching: The weather looks to be nice and sunny on Monday, giving you the perfect opportunity to take the kids out geocaching. Doesn’t cost a dime and everyone LOVES a good treasure hunt. We have everything you need to get started here.
5. Spend a Weird Day in Austin! Call ahead and see if the owner of the Cathedral of Junk will be home (he was for us last year) – spend a few hours poking around there before heading to South Congress for lunch (Home Slice Pizza or SoCo trailers anyone?). Make sure you pop into the Big Top Candy Shop and Lucy in Disguise for fun. Then find some fun Austin murals like this one to take your pictures in front of.
