Hurricane Harvey Recovery: How You Can Help

August 29, 2017 by Rebecca Darling

Spread the love

Are you at a loss of words at the devastation Hurricane Harvey left in Texas? Does your heart ache when you see the photos of flooding in Houston? The city of Rockport decimated? Here are a few ways you can help Texans who have been affected by Hurricane Harvey.

No doubt you have seen the horrific photos of the flooding we are facing in South Texas on your Facebook feed.  We proudly acknowledge that we are strong as Texans, and we are bonding together to help our neighbors like never before.  But our state is facing one of the biggest natural disasters ever. EVER.

We could use your help.

I know your heart is aching when you see the videos of people being rescued by first responders and volunteers. And you want to help, but just don’t know how.

I have researched for the past 2 days organizations that are providing direct assistance to those in need.  Right now, financial donations are so important. Every little bit helps – even if it’s only $1.  And we appreciate your consideration to give to our state.

Salvation Army

The Salvation Army prefers monetary donations to food or other goods, as it can use the money to provide exactly what’s needed. You can give directly through the website, or by phone at 1-800-SAL-ARMY.

United Way

The United Way of Greater Houston has set up a disaster recovery fund for Harvey. You can Donate online and choose to send the money to specific counties.

American Red Cross

Donate directly  on their website or by texting “HARVEY” to 90999 to donate $10.

GoFundMe

The charitable giving site, GoFundMe, has gathered many of the campaigns that are ongoing for Hurricane Harvey, including the one from Houston Texan, JJ Watt. Another way you can help, is by sharing these campaigns.

Texas Diaper Bank

The Texas Diaper Bank in San Antonio, is putting together relief kit for families with very small children who need access to clean diapers in the midst of flooding and evacuations. Many relief organizations do not supply diapers, so Texas Diaper Bank helps.

Food Banks

Many food banks across Texas will be affected over the coming months.  All are accepting financial donations:

Houston Food Bank

Galveston Food Bank

Southeast Texas Food Bank

Corpus Christi Food Bank

SPCA of Texas

The SPCA of Texas is taking in MANY animals that have been displaced and rescued.  They are accepting financial donations to assist in food and shelter for the pets.

Thanks Rebecca. Glad to see animals are listed. I know HSUS is down there, Red Rover is helping, along with St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center. Many animals are being brought up to NY and NJ.
