For years I thought of OnStar as simply a GPS directions guide. I certainly didn’t need it – my car had a navigation system. But then I heard a story that shook me to my core. I listened to an actual conversation between a young boy who had been in a car accident and the OnStar operator who was able to calmly help him and his mother.
Why did it upset me so? It made me realize something. If our family was ever in a situation like the one this young boy was in, would my children really know what to do? That week I made 2 changes. I immediately added the OnStar subscription to my GMC Yukon and I had age-appropriate conversations and training with all 3 of my kids.
Onstar Keeping Kids Safe E-Book
Taking it one step further, and hopefully bringing awareness of vehicle safety to a broad audience, OnStar has developed an e-book to help parents teach kids about what to do in vehicle emergencies. Partnering with Safe Kids Worldwide, the e-book includes a great deal of info information:
- A pre quiz to help evaluate what your child already knows about handling an emergency and what they need to learn
- Step-by-step instructions for specific emergencies, from a vehicle fire to a submerged vehicle.
- An emergency information form that you and your child can fill out together, so your child will be prepared to talk to 9-1-1 operators and emergency responders.
- A post quiz to understand how much your child has learned after reading the e-book.
In all honesty, it was a great review for us as parents to read as well, as the ebook covers situations such as what to do if locked in a hot vehicle, if you are involved in a vehicle crash, or if you are plunging into deep water. The book opened up the conversation to have with my children so that we both feel they are better prepared in case something happens.
