This upcoming Monday, February 17, 2020 is President’s Day. And with the kids out of school, we found 6 Fun Things to Do on President’s Day in Austin:
There are lots of historical spots to learn more about Presidents of the United States (important anyway of the year, not just President’s Day) here in Austin. And if it’s a gorgeous, sunny winter day, we have a few ideas how to get outdoors too!
Here are 6 Fun Things to Do on President’s Day in Austin:
1. Check out the new exhibits at the LBJ Presidential Library: The Library is offering free admission on President’s Day and it is a perfect time to go and see all the new exhibit, Hat’s Off to LBJ – headwear worn by and gifted to President and Lady Bird Johnson and the actual letter of condolence that LBJ wrote to Coretta Scott King. Free on President’s Day
2. Learn all about President Lyndon B. Johnson’s boyhood life at the LBJ National Historic Park: Located in Stonewall, TX (about an hour west of ATX), tour the Texas White House (set up as it was when he was President), pet many of the cattle that grace this actual working ranch, and see the school he attended. As a bonus, spend some time at the Sauer-Beckmann Farm, a living history farm. Both offer Free admission – a small fee to enter the Texas White House
3. Teach the kids a little more history at the Texas Military Forces Museum: We loved our half day visit to Camp Mabry where we learned about Texas Military History – from the battle at the Alamo to the Gulf Wars. With actual tanks, planes, and other vehicles as well as some cool memorabilia, this museum is top notch and interests all ages. For a bonus, take a quick hike up Mt. Bonnell afterwards, it’s right around the corner. Admission is Free
4. Find as many Austin Murals as you can! Last Spring, I put together a fun scavenger hunt to find as many Austin landmarks & murals as you could. If you haven’t tried it yet, now is the perfect opportunity! And there are some newer murals you may find – make sure you send me a picture if you do! Tweet me @rwetheryetmom Free
5. Austin Water Bikes: Have you tried water biking on Town Lake before? Don’t knock it til you try it! it’s a fun way to explore the lake and get some great exercise. Pretty much all ages can take a spin on the bike, or if they are little, they can ride on one of the hulls. Here’s our experience as well as a few tips if you go! Inexpensive
6. iFly Austin: The coolest way to catch the sensation of skydiving without having to jump out of a plane, iFly Austin is SO much fun!! All of my kids tried it – including the 6 year old – and LOVED it. They still talk about it to this day, asking when they can go again. You really can’t describe that feeling of weightlessness – it’s so cool!
