We are a Star Wars family. We have watched the original six til we know all the lines by heart. And when tickets went on sale for Star Wars The Force Awakens 3 months before it’s release, we had them. So when the trailer for the new Rogue One was released last week, we were more than excited to see it. And yes, my boys have watched it multiple times, soaking in every minute of Star Wars goodness. But what is Rogue One: A Star Wars Story?

What is Rogue One: A Star Wars Story?
I don’t just like Star Wars because I’m a boy mom. I actually have loved Star Wars since my mom took me to see the 3 original movies in the theater (that was before VHS y’all!). And I actually had several Star Wars toys and played it with friends as much as I could. I was always Princess Leia, of course.
And when Star Wars The Force Awakens came out, it was a childhood homecoming of sorts for me, seeing characters I loved show up on the screen again – I actually cheered out loud to see Han Solo.

But I don’t religiously follow all things Star Wars, so I’ll be honest, I didn’t know much about this new Star Wars film, Rouge One: A Star Wars Story when the trailer was released. So I set out to learn a little more, so we would be prepared for it when it gets released on December 16, 2016.
Here’s a few details I have been able to find.
What is Rogue One: A Star Wars Story? The Plot
The film will revolve around a rogue band of resistance fighters who unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans and bring new hope to the galaxy. Of course, this all takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope. So, Rogue One will be a prequel to all the 7 Star Wars movies.

What is Rogue One: A Star Wars Story? The Cast
The filmmakers have put together a pretty amazing cast: including Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, and Forest Whitaker. Rogue One is directed by Gareth Edwards, produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Allison Shearmur, and Simon Emanuel, executive produced by John Knoll and Jason McGatlin, and co-produced by John Swartz and Kiri Hart.

What is Rogue One: A Star Wars Story? The Rumors
One of the biggest rumors about the new prequel is that the character played by Felicity Jones, Jyn Erso, may possibly be Rey’s mother. The time lines could possibly line up to work this way, and as someone who loves to see connections from all the movies (have you googled Star Wars Easter Eggs?? Amazing stuff!), this would deb a pretty cool way to tie in Rey’s backstory. But there is no official word on that and probably won’t be until we see the movie in December.
